It's pretty good, I just have to ask why he keeps hitting that one symbol with 2 hands, not really necessary

I mean it sounds good, no doubt.  But he's not doing anything really technically hard for a drummer.  I'm not saying I could jump on a kit and do that the first time I tried.  But it's the same like 2 or 3 patterns the whole time.  I could go on about how it isn't that hard and all that, but the truth is it sounds the best when you keep it simple...unless you are a god on your instrument.  plus hiphop isn't very complicated in the first place, so busy drums would probably sound like crap.  i enjoyed it...a lot of energy when he plays...he's not just playing the drums, he's playin it like he means it.

as for hitting that symbol with two sticks....i guess it really doesn't serve much purpose.  my guess would be a different sound...but it seems to have the same sound as when he hits it with one.  perhaps he just did it for the visual or maybe it helped him time something better in the rhythm

Yea I was impressed by it but two of my housemates actually play drums and they said that most hip-hop beats can be played relatively easily on a set of drums

yep, quite simple as soon as you figure out the rhythm.  Rap and Hip-Hop use pretty much to same principle as swing, jazz, and rock have (rhythmically that is, otherwise hiphop is just about dumbed down as you can get).  They syncopate their rhythms.  This means accenting what are normally the weak beats (up beats) and un-accenting what is usually accented (down beats).

The simplest of explanations (it will always be more elaborate) is in standard 4/4 time (4 beats per measure, and the quarter note is the main pulse) you would usually have 1 2 3 4.  The underlined numbers being the accented beats.  That is how it is for basically all classical, baroque, romantic, etc music.  So count out 1 2 3 4 at an even pace while clapping or tapping, but accenting 1 and 3.

Syncopation however is accenting the offbeats/upbeats.  So you'd have 1 2 3 4 .  When you count the rhythm at the same pace as before, but now accent 2 and 4, you can feel/hear the difference.  Syncopation is used so highly, especially in pop/hiphop/dance music, because it's better to dance to and more catchy.

like here's a hip-hopish technoish song my friend and I were creating (never finished).

You'll notice that the claps are pretty much always accenting beats 2 and 4.  Plus the beat never changes too much, but the other voices do all the work over top of the steady beat.

this is basic drumming.  4/4 rock beat with the occasional roll every now and then.  Just because you've seen it on television (blink182), doesn't mean it must be good.
